Participate in the 2023 Cattlemen’s Poster Session
Participate in the 2023 Cattlemen’s Poster Session at the 107th CCA/CCW Convention and California Cattle Industry Tradeshow in Reno happening Nov. 29 – Dec. 1. The goal of the session is to inform attendees about ongoing beef cattle research and education efforts being conducted in California. Posters can be on something that was presented at previous meetings and there is no limit to the number of posters brought from each lab/program. New Episode of Sorting Pen: The California Cattleman Podcast 
A new episode ofSorting Pen: The California Cattleman Podcast is out now! In this episode Jimmy Maxey and Mike Smith, two past memers of the board that runs the Beef Checkoff, known as the Cattlemen’s Beef Board, sit down with Katie to explain how the Cattlemen’s Beef Board operates, including who is on the board and how decision of what gets funded are made. To listen to the episode click here.

USDA’s NRCS Extends Storm Assistance Deadline
On Friday, the California State office of USDA’s Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) announced that it has extended the deadline for producers impacted by this winter’s severe storms to apply for assistance under the Emergency Conservation Program (ECP). The new deadline to apply is December 29 (applications were previously due by last Friday). As a reminder, producers in all California counties who were impacted by severe storms or subsequent flooding from December 2022 through April 2023 are eligible for the ECP. In a separate announcement, NRCS announced that it has also extended the deadline for eligible producers to apply for the Discrimination Financial Assistance Program from October 31 to January 13, 2024.

National Cattlemen’s Foundation Encourages Undergraduate Students to Apply for Beef Industry Scholarship 
The National Cattlemen’s Foundation (NCF) is encouraging undergraduate students to apply for the 2024 CME Group Beef Industry Scholarship. The application deadline is Nov. 10, 12pm CT. For more information and to apply click here.

2023 Vesicular Stomatitis Virus (VSV)
From the California Department of Food and Agriculture Animal Health Branch
As of Oct. 13, there have been 9 new VSV-affected premises identified in equine facilities. The VSV incident and situation in California remains active and ongoing, and continues to require vigilance throughout the state. Ongoing and active outreach to encourage prompt reporting of suspect lesions in horses and susceptible livestock and an immediate movement of any suspect animals will continue to assist with preventing virus spread by infected animals. UCCE Offers AB 589 Water Measurement and Reporting Course 
November 6, 2023, 9:00am-12:30pm, UCANR Building in Davis, CA
The University of California Cooperative Extension (UCCE) will offer a water measurement and reporting course, as authorized by CCA-sponsored AB 589 (2017) and SB 880 (2022), on Monday, November 6. Given the limited number of trainings offered in 2023, early registration is encouraged. Registration is $30 and pre-registration is required. Historic Conservation Funding for California’s Farms, Ranches, and Wetlands Available USDA NRCS “USDA’s Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS)  is currently accepting applications for the Agricultural Conservation Easement Program through the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA). Interested landowners have until November 13, 2023 to apply for this special funding through IRA.
