BLM Solicits Resource Advisory Council Nominations
The Bureau of Land Management has announced that it is seeking nominations for 20 of the agency’s statewide and regional Resource Advisory Councils. RACs provide advice and recommendations to the BLM on land use planning and management.
In California, BLM is seeking nominees to serve on the California Desert District Advisory Council, Central California RAC and Northern California District RAC.
Individuals may nominate themselves or others. Additional information is available in the BLM’s Federal Register announcement, and RAC applications can be found here. Application materials must be submitted to Julie Hartley in the BLM California State Office by October 26.
Santa Teresa Livestock Port of Entry Has Reopened
The Santa Teresa, New Mexico livestock port of entry resumed cross-border cattle trade on Thursday. Santa Teresa is the largest port of entry for live cattle crossings from Mexico, accounting for roughly 40% of cattle imported through the southern border. Santa Teresa is the second port of entry reopened since USDA closed the southern border to live cattle crossings on July 7, 2025 due to the northward progression of New World Screwworm; the agency reopened the Douglas Port for live cattle imports on August 24. According to a July press release, USDA will next consider reopening the Columbus, New Mexico port of entry, likely in the latter half of October.
According to USDA, “Every animal entering the United States through these ports will undergo a full USDA inspection to ensure it is free of any signs of” New World screwworm. For additional information, see the July 27 edition of California Cattleman Weekly.
2026 California Cattlemen’s Association Scholarships are Due This Thursday, 10/1
In 2025, CCA awarded over $51,000 in scholarships to students studying agriculture. Applications must be typed and returned in full to the California Cattlemen’s Association office by Thursday, October 1, 2026 at 11:59pm via email to Gracie at gracie@calcattemen.org. Lassen County Less-Than-Lethal Wolf Deterrence Training
October 6, 11:00am-3:00pm, Big Valley
Ranchers in wolf territory are encouraged to participate in a free training session for the ability to use non-lethal projectiles and pursuit to haze wolves interacting with livestock. The training sessions are authorized by the California Department of Fish and Wildlife and administered by USDA APHIS Wildlife Services. These training sessions are free and offered for livestock producers in wolf territory on a first-come, first-served basis. For more information and to register, click here.
