Santa Teresa Livestock Port of Entry to Reopen Thursday
U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Brooke Rollins announced last week that that the Santa Teresa, New Mexico livestock port of entry will reopen this Thursday. Santa Teresa is the largest port of entry for live cattle crossings from Mexico, accounting for roughly 40% of cattle imported through the southern border. Santa Teresa will be the second port of entry reopened since USDA closed the southern border to live cattle crossings on July 7, 2025 due to the northward progression of New World Screwworm; the agency reopened the Douglas Port for live cattle imports on August 24. According to a July press release, USDA will next consider reopening the Columbus, New Mexico port of entry, likely in the latter half of October.
According to USDA, “Every animal entering the United States through these ports will undergo a full USDA inspection to ensure it is free of any signs of” New World screwworm. For additional information, see the July 27 edition of California Cattleman Weekly.
2026 California Cattlemen’s Association Scholarships are Open Now!
In 2025, CCA awarded over $51,000 in scholarships to students studying agriculture. Lassen County Less-Than-Lethal Wolf Deterrence Training
October 6, 11:00am-3:00pm, Bieber
Ranchers in wolf territory are encouraged to participate in a free training session for the ability to use non-lethal projectiles and pursuit to haze wolves interacting with livestock. The training sessions are authorized by the California Department of Fish and Wildlife and administered by USDA APHIS Wildlife Services. These training sessions are free and offered for livestock producers in wolf territory on a first-come, first-served basis. For more information and to register, click here.
