Dear Burger King: It’s Time to Rethink Methane

CCA Responds to the #CowsMenu Campaign

The California Cattlemen’s Association is disappointed by the release of Burger King’s #CowsMenu campaign. Based on misleading information and a blatantly inaccurate portrayal of bovine biology, Burger King has stretched their “scientific” data miseducating American consumers.

Launched July 14, the campaign contains greenhouse gas claims that researchers have questioned. However, cows can actually be part of a climate change solution, as explained in the video below which was recently released by the Clarity and Leadership for Environmental Awareness and Research Center (CLEAR Center) at UC Davis.

California’s cattle ranching and dairy families are leaders in sustainable cattle production, continually refining practices to meet the integrity consumers expect. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, direct emissions from beef cattle equate to just 2% of total U.S. greenhouse gas emissions. Furthermore, in the last decade, producing a liter of milk in California emitted 50% less greenhouse gases, all while using less land and decreasing water consumption by 88%.

Farmers and ranchers live and work on the land every day. Burger King should leave the ranching practices to the original environmentalists—farmers and ranchers.
