The History of CCA

The California California Cattlemen’s Association (CCA) was formed in 1917. CCA is a non-profit trade association representing California’s ranchers and beef producers in legislative and regulatory affairs.  CCA’s funding is generated almost entirely by voluntary dues paid by members, who in turn determine the direction and policy of the organization at CCA’s two annual meetings.

CCA has 38 county cattlemen’s association affiliates that serve as a strong link between the grassroots membership and CCA. The California CattleWomen, Inc., is the women’s auxiliary of CCA and works to promote the nutritional qualities of beef at schools, supermarkets and before the general public. CCA is an affiliate of the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association with offices in Washington, D.C., Denver, and Chicago. In addition, the Young Cattlemen's Committee serves as a  link with the next generation of California ranchers promoting education, leadership and career enhancement.

Through educational programs like Beef Quality Assurance, CCA helps show the value of proper handling and treatment of livestock. Having certified more than 5,000 producers in BQA, CCA takes great pride in its ability to share with members the importance of humane treatment of animals and the further promoting the safety of the U.S. Beef Supply.

Because of the tremendous resource base on which our members depend for their livelihoods, CCA staff lobbies the California State Legislature, Congress, and federal and state regulatory agencies on a wide range of issues including, but not limited to:

 ● Food safety and inspection
 ● Federal and state endangered species
 ● Beef quality assurance
 ● Parcel fees
 ● Wildlife management
 ● Air quality
 ● Noxious weeds
 ● Williamson Act
 ● Conservation programs
 ● Wetlands
 ● Federal lands grazing fees and regulation

CCA also funds litigation and research to support California’s beef cattle industry, and maintains a political action committee to support those candidates favorable to family ranchers and beef producers. CCA is extremely proud of its long-standing record of credibility, accomplishment and positive working relationship with policymakers throughout California and in Washington, D.C., in representing beef cattle producers, the stewards of an American tradition. As environmentalists, food producers, business owners and taxpayers, we look forward to continuing these relationships with federal, state and local government institutions.
