Feeder Council Chair Mike Smith
Mike Smith serves as the CCA Feeder Council Chair. Born and raised on a commercial cow/calf operation in the Rogue River Valley of south-western Oregon, Smith has always had a vested interest in cattle, including the way they are cared for.
After earning his Bachelor’s degree in Animal Science from Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo in 1986, Smith went on to earn his Master’s degree in Animal Science at Oklahoma State University in 1990.
Since 2004, Smith has been the special projects manager for Harris Ranch responsible for coordinating the Harris Ranch Partnership for Quality program, overseeing legislative and regulatory affairs, maintaining industry relations, overseeing research projects and acting as a liaison between Harris Feeding Company and Harris Ranch Beef Company.
Before his time at Harris Ranch, Smith dedicated a majority of his time to beef quality assurance programs with the Colorado Cattle Feeder's Association, Colorado State University, and the National Cattlemen's Beef Association managing the respective quality assurance programs in each organization and conducting research revolving around certain audit programs in the beef cattle industry. Smith also provided on-site consultation for environmental management of confined animal feeding facilities in Colorado, with AgProfessionals, LLC, as a technical services director monitoring facilities to ensure compliance with federal, state, and county environmental laws.
Currently, Smith serves on the Board of Directors for the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association, North American Meat Institute, California Beef Council, and the California Cattlemen’s Association.
Mike and his wife Sara and their daughter Jessie currently reside in Visalia, CA. Their son, Clayton, is now attending Oklahoma State University in Stillwater, OK where he is majoring in agricultural economics.
